Title I
Parent's Right to Know
All SAU 56 schools except for the Career Technical Center, are eligible for program funding through the Federal Title I, Part A legislation. Federal funds are allocated to each school by the New Hampshire Department of Education. Allocations vary each year and are based on Free and Reduced lunch count numbers. These funds are used to provide supplemental educational services for children to acquire the knowledge and skills to meet the State of New Hampshire proficiency standards. This purpose may be accomplished in two ways:
- By providing children supplemental support through enriched and accelerated education programs.
- By providing instructional personnel in participating schools with substantial opportunities for professional development.
Most schools in SAU 56 are designated as Schoolwide Title 1 schools. Somersworth High School is designated as a Targeted Assistance School.
Are you wondering how a school is identified to receive Title I funding? The answer to that question has to do with the number of families who qualify for reduced or free lunch. This designation is based on family income. If a school is identified as a schoolwide Title I school, that means that forty (40%) percent of the schools population meets the criteria for free/reduced lunch. Target Assisted schools have a free and reduced population that is less than forty (40%) percent. This means a selection process is used to determine which students would benefit from supplemental services. This instructional support is provided for students in addition to their participation in regular classroom core instruction. Parents are contacted, informed about the services available and encouraged to give permission for their children to participate.
Additional services are available to homeless children and youth through Title I. More information can be found here: McKinney Vento-Act
Did you know you have a right to know the qualifications of your child's teachers and paraprofessionals? Did you know that your school district must notify you of your right to request information about the qualifications of your child's teachers and paraprofessionals?
At the beginning of the school year, the school district must notify parents of all children who attend Title I schools of their right to request information about the qualifications of your child's teachers and paraprofessionals, including:
- Whether the teacher has met State qualification and licensing criteria for the grade levels and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction.
- Whether the teacher is teaching under emergency or other provisional status through which State qualification or licensing criteria have been waived.
- The baccalaureate degree major of the teacher and any other graduate certification or degree held by the teacher, and the field of discipline of the certification or degree.
- Whether the child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications.
Qualifications of Substitute Teachers
